In 2016, myself and four students in my Hip Hop and Popular Culture in Africa course attended the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. The Department of African Studies provided partial funding for the trip and the festival organizers paid for the students’ meals.
The students were able to participate in the panel discussions, the graffiti workshop, and attend the performances. It was also an opportunity for students to meet and interact with the artists and Trinity College students. It was a great experience for them, and they had the opportunity to hear from artists from all over the world, including Tanzania, Kenya, Russia, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
